expat and other ports/packages

I'm trying to install several packages. Some of them require the expat 
package. Expat is no longer distributed as a package but is instead in the 
base system (because if you try to compile the expat port it tells you 
so).

Is there a workaround or do I have to find all the packages that have an 
expat requirement and alert the package maintainers to fix their packages?
