with the extra letter at the end, that will just sort alphanumerically,
which won't do what you want (pkgname-1.0.beta10b sorts _after_ pkgname-1.0),
the various suffixes like beta _only_ accept a plain number afterwards

I suggest using the date it was released instead, e.g. this will work ok:
pikopixel-1.0beta20230302

play with pkg_check-version, give it a list of package names including
version, it returns the sort order, then you can see if it will behave.
