From what I read, when I saw the discussion, it doesn't seem like this is in scope as it applies to a much more restricted system configuration that is not the default. One person in that thread did propose a solution though, so that it can work.
Yeah i'm about caught up I think. I'm not quite sure about the localisation but I can try that. I have my OpenBSD test laptop in front of me. I'll play around with it.
LibreWolf does support localisation. I have translated menus in my LibreWolf browser on Linux (German language). Although the browser reports only en-US to websites by default, such that actual web pages might only appear in English, you can also override that as I have on my Linux librewolf setup. My openbsd librewolf setup is pretty much stock (all I added was "I still don't care about cookies" plugin).
So if there is a problem with i18n in librewolf on openbsd, I'm not yet sure if it's a problem with the port, or just something that has to be turned on in the browser. I know that the firefox port has a separate package for that in distinfo. I don't see that the librewolf project provides such files in its own project.
Is it just that you have to add new package for other languages? on my openbsd machine I see that I have "Preferred language" in about:preferences, but the only option available to choose from is English.
I then went into "Website language" and was able to add German successfully, in my openbsd librewolf. The menus don't change, but I tried a website that is multi-language and it displayed in German.
I think LibreWolf just doesn't do translations for the menus. There *are* languages packs for firefox, and I tried to install one (de-DE), but I got a message in librewolf sayidng that it doesn't allow installing the language patch. I did some research, and apparently this is because the firefox language patch will be missing certain strings that are added in the LibreWolf browser, leading to error, so they simply disabled it.
I do have german in my librewolf browser on LInux, but it might be inherited from Firefox. I installed librewolf ages ago on that machine and when I did, I hacked my firefox profile so that it would load on librewolf, so that I wouldn't have to re-configure anything. I just wanted librewolf as a base, when setting it up on that machine.
I won't bother investigating this for now, but it would be nice to have translations in the librewolf menus. If someone wants to look into that, I'd be happy, though I don't think this would be specific to openbsd. This is something that should be done upstream, if at all.
All of this is to say:I don't thin the menu translation issue is a problem, as such. I think it is intended behaviour in upstream. I couldn't find much useful information about actually translating librewolf. I don't think it is intended that the librewolf menu actually be translated.
