Not a fan of this.
kmos@ added the COMPILER line for sparc64 build at the time. I don't know what
the error was and if it was fixable.
What makes switching from meson to autotool change the gcc requirement?
Maybe we could make meson matches what autotool is doing and not require port
gcc?
And why do we need the SHARED_LIBS major bump?
