Upstream also authors x11/jgmenu, an openbox menu which also targets freedesktop menu specifications. Johan Malm has been receptive to
incorporating changes in jgmenu that enable NetBSD builds and on
providing scripting examples for labwc-menu-generator.

I've tested labwc-menu-generator for over a week and am pleased with it.
1. A *.desktop file in ~/.local/share/applications takes precedence
over the system *.desktop file. This allow easy editing for
applications that show in 2 categories, ie libreoffice -math in both
Accessories and Office.
2. It was useful in detecting icons that were not in the proper
location - librecad has/?had their icons in /usr/local/lib/librecad.
Makes it easy to correct locally in ~/.local/share/icons.
3. It honors "NoDisplay=true" appended to a *desktop file.
4. My menus are a near replica of those provided by jgmenu.
5. It honors labwc theme settings.

The only thing I have not tested is the incorporation of the utility in
an Openbox style pipe menu. I'm pretty settled on the applications I
use and do not need the extra processing for a pipe menu.
