I am seeing (on mine and another machine I have remote access
to) - internal compiler errors, bus errors, sometimes loops at
100%cpu in gcc, libtool producing files without headers it
then refuses to touch again, various .core scattered around,
occasional panics.
After several days of building, I can report that my Thecus
with 512MB was able to build this without problems. It

Could be a hardware problem elsewhere in your Thecus, but you mentioned
two machines with the same problem. Note that I was building over NFS,
not hitting the local disk so hard. And my kernel is a couple of months
old (November); next step is to reboot with a new kernel and run the
build again.
My RAM stick is a Kingston KVR400X64C3A/512. I'm not going to create an
