I'm just the guy who wrote 99% of the documentation of the ports and package tree you're currently using, and who also wrote most of the current code in bsd.port.mk and pkg_add. That entitles me to some arrogance. If I tell you make update does not do what you think it does, and that it's not going to change in *my system*, I have every right to say so. If you don't like it, you can write your own tools. It works very well as it currently is. Your comments do show that we are missing some documentation so that people like you won't be misled, and I will write that documentation when I have time. In the meantime, you can trust what I say.
