Well i'm using thunderbird 3 daily since 3.0.1, now 3.0.4, and don't see
any of those problems. This is -current/amd64.

You'll have to provide more information if you want someone to help you.
What is 'full drop back to console' ? Do you have some special malloc
options ? I suppose you started with a new thunderbird profile ?

If you really want someone to help, you'll have to build a debug version
of it (DEBUG=-g INSTALL_STRIP='' make reinstall in
mail/mozilla-thunderbird) and run it inside gdb to catch the crash
traces.
