This is not OpenBSD's fault. Firefox runs the most disciplined on OpenBSD. Try FF on FreeBSD and Windows (any flavor),the absolute worse performance happens on Windows. FF 3.6.X on Windows XP/Vista/7 assumes everybody has 2-8GB of memory dedicated to a browser. Firefox in the bygone days in 2005 used to be good, started going down around 2007. Now FF 4 seems to have copied Opera 10.6X idea of a single menu tab. You need FF in Unixy world now to get banking, credit card, amazon etc. My hope is that they fix some of it in FF4. If not, its gone from everyday use.
