I have used the sdl patch on my OpenBSD and Linux boxen since quite some time and never run into issues (on the linux boxen lots of OpenQL games, flash, movies and other nonsense). Not so much on later OpenBSD (> 4.7) since I lack a 3d gfx card supported by OpenBSD and not needing 10.000 watts.
