the only silverlight solution outside of direct microsoft is the
moonlight project: http://www.go-mono.com/moonlight/

i have no idea how hard it would be to get that to work here, and
a quick read of the page reports that it still requires downloads
from microsoft anyhow; the first page you visit with a silverlight
object, the moonlight software reportedly downloads required codecs
from microsoft.

to porters:  would allowing a package that does this be theoretically
possible like the microsoft mstcorefonts package?  or is that just
because mstcorefonts is available on sourceforge.
