A quick look at the best electronic media
* ROCK STARS DO THE DUMBEST THINGS: www.dumbest.com/ This
electronic billboard for the book by Bill Crawford and Margaret Moser
features a dim-bulb moment by a rock star each week, as well as an
archive of dumb comments and incidents involving stars from Neil
Diamond to Vanilla Ice. Rod Stewart is so nominated- not for
separating from his supermodel wife- but for saying that the woman
who inspired the hit song Maggie May, was "one of the first if not
the first woman I ever loved. I forget what her name was."
* ELVIS PRESLEY: NOT JUST THE KING OF ROCK 'N' ROLL:
www.robyn.on.net/elvis/ That Elvis, he's not just a music icon
anymore. At least that's the contention of this site, which credits
The King with providing insights about astrology and psychological
voodoo. Sounds like a hunka-hunka burning junk.
* ROCK 'N' ROLL MINOR PLANETS: www.harvard.edu/cfa/ps/special/
RockAndRoll.html When the moon is in the seventh house, and
Jupiter aligns with Mars, someone comes up with a harebrained idea
like naming actual minor planets after classic rock stars. (Not all
of these can be considered rock 'n' rollers in the true sense of the
term. Vangelis? Don't think so.) But a dozen or so- from Clapton to
Zappa- get their place in the heavens and this page tells you where
they reside.
* TRIBUTE SITE TO DEAD ROCK STARS:
www.hotshotdigital.com/WellAlwaysRemember.html This site is the love
child of fans just like you who want nothing more than a place to
gather and pay their respects to the men and women who entertained
and inspired millions around the world. So honored are the usual
Official Dead Rocker Icons like Hendrix, Holly, Mercury, Morrison,
Tupac and Presley, plus lesser knowns like Rory Gallagher, Wong Ka
Kui and Shannon Hoon.
* ROCK 'N' ROLL IN THE AMERICAN FIFTIES:
home.wxs.nl/~kick/rock_'n'_roll_in_the_american_fifties.htm While
this site has the faint, stale whiff of American Graffiti -style
golden memories, it goes a step beyond by including sections that
provide perspective on where the music genre's roots lay in context
with the cultural realm of the '50s.
* ROCK 'N' ROLL HANGOVER: static.pseudo.com/index.asp?showid17
This site offers an hour-long trip look at the gritty underbelly of
Rock 'n' Roll. You'll hear all sorts of garage, punk, blues,
country, soul, rockabilly, and any other 3-Chord madness they can dig
up. Hangover is like the dude who had all the coolest records,
always knew where the happening scene was and didn't mind letting you
in on it. There are also heavy doses of trivia and news, contests
and more.
* ROCK 'N' ROLL REPORTER ONLINE: www3.pgh.net/~rockreporter/ This
page links visitors to local, regional and national music news, CD
reviews, musician classifieds, a 1996 band listing and interviews
with top rock artists past and present. Check the classified section
for rock music jobs, instruments and equipment, guitar lessons,
repairs, etc.
* THIS DAY IN ROCK & ROLL HISTORY: www.arrowfm.com/cgi/history.pl
Just 52 years ago, Warren Zevon was born. Elvis recorded Teddy Bear
42 years ago, and 30 years ago, Jethro Tull played its first U.S.
concert when it opened for Led Zeppelin. This site gives you a list
of the big events on each day in rock history, as well as a way to
access any day during the year.
Around the Web
* * GUIDE TO COUNTRY MUSIC: countrymusic.miningco.com/ Instead of
* laboriously "mining" the Net, start your search for country music
factoids at this Mining Company site. Looking for star photos? Fan
* clubs? Festivals? Concert reviews? Bluegrass sites? Stop off here
and have a look. Click through links to sites for dozens of male and
female stars, duos and groups. Pick up a Garth Brooks screensaver or
video clip. Check chat rooms and message boards. An easy-to-use
resource.
