First off, I don't care about Sandy Denny. I don't care about Richard
Thompson. And I don't care about British folk music (except maybe when
bastardized by primitive New Worlders). I know, I know. I'm going to be in
front of St. Peter, he's gonna look at my record collection, and he's gonna
ask me about the lack of Fairport. I'm gonna hem and I'm gonna haw, and
he'll look down his nose at me, push that button, and "Whoooooosh!!!" I'm
gonna slide right down into a writhing Hell, wondering "Why did I sell that
copy of Liege and Lief? Why? Why?"
As for the Plane, I do own a copy of Surrealistic and I listened to it
exactly once. I got it precisely because it WAS an artifact from the '60's.
Well, as coincidence should have it, that artifact holds up the space
between two current threads: The Jayhawks "TTGG" and Waylon's "Ol' Waylon."
Unfortunately, that artifact is a dust-collector. Sorry, just didn't do much
for me. However, I love White Flag's mock-up of the Pillow cover on their
"White Rabbit" 45. And, lest we forget, there was Homer's brilliant
reference to the Airplane, Starship, and Alan Parsons Project, which I would
love to see get quoted here by another Simpsons obsessive.
