So I've been diggin' the new Kelly Willis record "What I Deserve" for a
couple of weeks and I'm looking forward to seeing her live for the third
time in the last year next month. And in addition to Chuck Prophet and the
other greats who play on the album, I noticed that former Call-leader
Michael Been plays bass on many of the tracks. For those who don't remember
Been, his dramatic vocals and REALLY LOUD bass playing were the focal point
of this excellent 80s band on songs like "I Still Believe", "Everywhere I
Go" and "I Don't Wanna". On first glance, Been, while a great bass player,
doesn't seem a likely choice to play bass on an alt-country album. So my
question is this: how did he hook up with Kelly? Is he spending his
post-Call days as a session player? Is he a friend of hers or what? Any
other fans of the Call out there know the story?

Just askin',
       Slonedog
