The author, Benjamin Rush, was probably the most prominent physician in America in the last quarter of the 18th Century and first quarter of the 19th Century. He was a professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania at a time when American colleges and universities did not have schools of medicine. He was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.
