For those wishing to know: John Bowring had been on business in Spain for some time and on coming back to England (early 1819) he published this, his first book. Bowring was a pologlot and would later become a radical politician and his observations forshadow the latter. A few months after this he was in Norwich as a dinner guest, when a young George Borrow met him for the first time, giving a (somewhat biased) account in Lavengro. This book was their topic of conversation.
