It really sounds like the person who made this assignment doesn't
understand the difference between SMTP and webmail or perhaps SMTP and
POP and IMAP.  A shared address book for webmail or even for an IMAP
server is quite reasonable.  Trying to shoehorn it into SMTP is not.
