That dovecot version is very old with many many known bugs
that have been corrected in newer releases (I don't remember
if any of those bugs are directly related to your problem, but
why bother with known defective software when the fix is
available).
I strongly suggest you upgrade dovecot before any further
troubleshooting.
Aug 23 19:01:55 mails postfix/smtpd[3472]: warning: SASL: Connect to
private/auth failed: No such file or directory
Dovecot is not creating the auth socket for postfix to use, or
at least not creating it in the right place.
Your first task is to get dovecot working so it can create the
socket for postfix to talk to. This is not a postfix problem.
Further troubleshooting of postfix is not possible until
dovecot is working correctly.
You will get better help with this on the dovecot list.

the postfix portion once dovecot is working.
