Thanks for your private reply and post. I was going to post your discoveries here too, but in this case I believe the problem is not glibc (I have version 2.7-10, I believe the bug was in v2.3.6). The particular host not only has 200+ PTR records, but many of them are invalid as pointed out by mouss. So this seems to be normal behavior actually, postfix is given an unresolvable result and behaves as expected.
