Bingo. Thanks. In my defence, if you look at https://www.postfix.org/postconf.5.html which purports to list all of the main.cf parameters, you will find smtp_sasl_type but not smtpd_sasl_type. I saw it in the sasl page but thought it was a typo. Perhaps someone could add the missing section to the postconf page?
