Some anti-virus solution include a SMTP proxy that can break the
dialogue in a similar way. I've seen some McAfee versions doing

Simon, thanks for your response. The link you provide suggests that
the McAfee product is completely blocking port 25 and that isn't the
case here. It did get me to thinking about my AV solution though. I
know it does email scanning. I happen to use AVG. A quick search on
AVG and port 25 found this discussion:

In case anyone is following along, it suggests that AVG is the culprit
in some other intermittent email related issues. It gives me an avenue
to consider and test. I'll report back if I find anything definitive.
