[1]spamassassin accounts for 90%+ of the time spent in amavisd-new. Amavisd-new speeds up spamassassin by pre-loading modules and scanning multiple-recipient mail only a single time. Doing the filtering in maildrop would allow end-users to more easily add or bypass the filtering, but will likely be lower performance.
