So, it seems that there was a bug in the earlier version of glibc (can't tell which one it was). After I upgraded today to:

glibc.x86_64 2.12-1.80.el6_3.3
glibc-common.x86_64 2.12-1.80.el6_3.3

these errors ceased to occur.

Our other CentOS 6.3 systems (also more or less experimental) were already using the latest version of glibc since the 26th of July.

Our full-production systems are currently only CentOS 5.8 but we are gradually preparing for moving to CentOS 6.
