The XFORWARD_README / "XFORWARD Command syntax" currently tersely states:

- The PROTO attribute specifies the mail protocol for receiving mail from the up-stream host. This may be an SMTP or non-SMTP protocol name of up to
64 characters, or [UNAVAILABLE] when the information is unavailable.

This is somewhat vague, as it does not state whether the protocol name
is just something like SMTP, ESMTP, QMQP,

or whether this also includes the RFC 3848 Transmission Types
(ESMTPA, ESMTPS, ESMTPSA),

or whether it carries the "WITH protocol types" as registered at IANA:
  http://www.iana.org/assignments/mail-parameters/mail-parameters.xhtml
like:
SMTP, ESMTP, ESMTPA, ESMTPS, ESMTPSA, (LMTP, LMTPA, LMTPS, LMTPSA),
  UTF8SMTP, UTF8SMTPA, UTF8SMTPS, UTF8SMTPSA,
  UTF8LMTP, UTF8LMTPA, UTF8LMTPS, UTF8LMTPSA, ...

In particular, it would be handy (for logging purposes) if the
UTF8SMTPS?A? set would be included in the XFORWARD PROTO field.
