I've now done both.

My split-horizon DNS sits on the office LAN.

So on the office postfix server on the lan, I already have

  host  10.1.0.17
    7.0.1.10.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer relaymx.MYDOMAIN.com.


Adding the 'quick fix' on the VPS, since I don't have it reach back over the 
VPN to the internal DNS,

  cat /etc/hosts
+    10.1.0.17  relaymx.MYDOMAIN.com

But I still get that 

  "unknown [10.1.0.17]"

Like you said, since mail's flowing, I'm lucky ... but I prefer your "safe 
choice" of getting it right.

What else might I have missed?
