The client is sending an incorrect password, but if you want to resolve

Those two sound suspiciously similar to me.
different problems can have same symptomps...
But OK. The password is fine with the vpn off, but the password is bad
with the vpn on. I wonder why this only happens with postfix, but I'll
find out somewhere else.
I guess your VPN provider is hijacking your TCP connections to port 25.
have you tried using port 465 for authenticated submission?
