I had a niggling feeling I read somewhere once before it was required to run postgresql at least once before compiling postgis against it. Google's found nothing to back me up, so obviously I was quite mistaken. I've never worried about it because I've always configured and tested a new postgresql before even thinking about compiling postgis as a matter of course. I was just a little concerned that Ahmad's src compiled postgresql wasn't in a runable state.
