From my point of view, the differences shouldn't be too great - probably the debug changes will be the largest and those are fairly easy to resolve, if not a little tedious.
I have a feeling that with the new curve types, there aren't any more bits left to define extra geometry types within the LWGEOM structure. So this may cause problems for people trying to upgrade...
