Hi Bob,

As far as geometric entities the two GUI viewers that I am familiar with that can draw these are uDig and Mapwindow.

I have not used uDIG for this but I have used Mapwindow a bit.

Link to download Mapwindow is here:
http://www.mapwindow.org/download.php?show_details=1

Mapwindow unfortunately is a windows only project but has several useful features not found in the other cross-platform tools already mentioned.

From the menu:
Plugins > Shapefile Editor

That adds to useful icons to the toolbar:
1) Create New Shapefile
2) Add a new regular shape to current shapefile

This will allow you to create one of 4 geometric shapes: n-sided regular polygon, rectangle, circle, or ellipse

Mapwindow also has the ability to load shapefiles into postgis, but this is a feature I have not used. If I need to do this from a graphic environment (rather than shp2pgsql) I use Qgis and the 'Spit' plugin.

Cheers,

Dane

Thank you

I use QGis as a viewer and I also have Open Jump.

From what I have been able to determine so far, the editing tools only allow
editing of geographic files that have already been created.

I was hoping for a way of drawing geometric entities (boxes, spheres etc.) that can then be exported as a shapefile or directly as WKT or WKB.

Perhaps, these two viewers have this capability? If so, I would appreciate a link that explains how to use the system.

Bob
