Do you have access to ArcGIS?  If so have a look at the Data
Interoperability extension.  It uses FME, and in my experience does a
very good job at uploading to PostGIS.  You can usually get a trial
licence of the extensions if it's a one time thing.

Turns out I misunderstood the requirement.  The file format is, in
fact, a "File Geodatabase" (as introduced in ArcGIS 9.2).  There are
no tools yet that support this format, right?  Again, it's size is so
large that converting to an intermediate format does not work.
