Quantum GIS has a powerful plugin-based architecture, allowing you to search/download plugins at runtime. Chances are there's one for you, but you can also write your own, or have it written by somebody (I see mapinfo license costs around 1.5k USD...). Freely sharing effort with other geologists would give you the best.
