Anne I think it is not a pound problem, red hat 4 is a old distro, kernel 2.4? can you try install pound in another distro?
I think it is better than your managers are going to now remove rh4 than pound :P Are you compiling pound? try use another version I use 2.3 with rh5.1 in in production actually, and all is good.
