Thanks Jari, That worked after I removed the '301' part, which pound reported as an unknown directive when I restarted it (perhaps because I'm using an old version?).
After updating the config, the first time the url loaded it went to example.com but thereafter to www.example.com on all other tries and machines/mobiles. I guess it would be good to get the 301 working for search engines to recognise www.example.com as the canonical domain, but I'm happy for now. Many thanks Jari! More noob questions to come soon.
