Here's what I suggest: You, Alan & I (and anyone else) will discuss guidelines and we'll consult you on technical points. Alan & I will split the work and submit version-numbered copies for review. We'll merge each others' changes into a main version-numbered doc as they are mutually agreed upon and approved by you. So all editors will have their own FTP folders with version-numbered working copies and there'll be a main folder for approved doc versions.
You could take ownership of the main docs and do all final merging of changes yourself or you could delegate.
