An untested suggestion:
Experiment with different font settings in the
command list's properties.
I think the rectangle's height is based on what the text needs.

To avoid having to use a very small point size
in order to reduce your rectangle's height
I suggest you explore the following:

--------------------------------------

The real height of some text is more than the height of
the visible characters, leaving space for underlines and
for descenders as in p g y q j, and for accents above.

There is also some white space above and below to create
enough line spacing -- which varies between fonts.
The total line height is different for each font
even when all fonts are the same point size.

Try typing this into a word processor:
Friday July 16 10:45 am
Friday July 16 10:45 am
Friday July 16 10:45 am
[blank line]

Repeat the above several times.
Give each block of 3 lines a different font.
Everything should have Single set as the line spacing
and the same point size, maybe 10.

You will see that with Verdana Tahoma Arial etc
each has a different amount of default space visible between
the lines, even though the visible character height looks the
same. Verdana for example has comparatively tight line spacing
even though it uses more horizontal space for the same text.

So by choosing a font with tight default (Single) line spacing
maybe you won't need to reduce the point size so much to achieve
a line height which is small enough to give you a rectangle
height which is small enough.

Wandering off your topic...
I notice that this makes a big difference to menus.
With 9 point Verdana one particular menu might reach
half way down the screen. With some other font, also
in 9 point, the same menu will go further down the
screen, even though the characters themselves look
the same size.
