As you say, who cares if xscreen returns 1024, as long as commands like window.position, move, etc, and functions like win.left() all work as desired. Sounds like there's no point risking their beta software's "span mode". If you do take the risk, be sure to use XP's system restore feature to set a restore point first, to make it easy to go back if you don't like the result.
