FWIW: PS-Tray Factory does it by starting itself from LocalMachine-RunOnce
and then (I believe) reinserts its startup key once running in:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
