I have not (real) solution for you.
But for many years I have use dual CPU system,
and this is best solution for stability in case of disk access.
For years I even don't suppose that it is possible that winamp
or my favorite avi player MPC can drops during playback.
Few months ago I changed my system to
uniprocessor and its it is terrible for me that all system micro
freezes.

As I suppose you won't buy dual-cpu system, but if you have
hypher-threading prosessor then try reinstall (or change) windows with
multiprocessor krenel (only win NT and Professional series).
Maybe it can helps.
Actually I don't have HT-precessor, so I don't know if it helps.

If you find any working solution write some info.

Good luck!
