Hello Alec, The registry entries you just posted all look good. Here is one other possible lead: What I wrote about entries in hkey_classes_root is the full story in Win98/95. In XP, Microsoft have added an extra complication, which makes the registry even more mysterious and makes the associations harder to control.
Under HKCR there is a key: SystemFileAssociations It seems any entries here will override what is in the usual keys for filetypes. For example MS puts an entry in here which causes double click on any image file to open it in MS Picture and Fax Viewer. Then you go crazy when you change the shell\open\command key for bmpfile, etc, and it has no effect. Maybe in your registry there is a key in SystemFileAssociations for icons? I don't know whether there are any other similar annoying exceptions to the normal workings of HKCR. I think you could find out like this: Highlight the top of the list in the left panel in regedit "My Computer" so your search will start at the beginning or should I say begin at the start. Then Menu, Edit, Find... DefaultIcon Keep pressing F3 (find next) You will need the patience of a saint because there are plenty of DefaultIcon entries. If there is a DefaultIcon entry for icon files hidden in some obscure place, you will find it eventually. One more annoyance to watch out for: After searching through HKCR, it searches Current_User then Local_Machine which contains Software\Classes which is a mirror of HKCR so you start searching the same stuff again. so jump past that block and then start using F3 again.
