for this very reason I prefer to use an external mail checker and drive it from 
powerpro.

my choice is CheckP3 5.1 from http://www.nonags.com/nonags/emn.html
because it's free, small and portable (doesn't use the registry if it finds its 
own ini file, say, on a usb key), 
has comprehensive protocol/security support and multiple identities.

when checkp3 detects a new message it can run a program; it runs a powerpro 
script in my case.
the script reads message info from the checkp3 popup window.
checkp3 can also perform some mailbox management, such as reading, deleting or 
downloading 
messages and saving them in eml format.
