One problem is: user can provide any old callback command.

So unless I get sucked into parsing the command for quotes, using the
suggested
>esc(?0x19stuff0x18nmorestuff0x19,"0x18")
may or may not work.
So: in my plugins, where a possible escape-character problem might
come up with an insertion marker in a callback command, there'll be
an alternative.
You can specify the callback without an insertion marker, so plugin
never tries to stuff a literal string into a command. Depending on
plugin, either they'll always be a global variable set to the result,
or thery're be a service to call to get last result.
I'll put health warnings in docs about using insertion marker if esc
char or newline/cr expected.
