Yes, I should put out an error message in this case. Near as I can tell, the code is structured just to ignore the invalid file and treat it as if no file at all was used, but I will review this if you confirm the issue. But it is hard to see how this could have the symptoms you describe so perhaps something else was happening with your configuration as well.
