PCRE has internal pattern modifiers that start with (? i,m,x,s,and U but UTF-8 isn't one of the them. Ungreedy is capital U not lowercase u. In PHP the pattern goes between forward slashes and externally specified modifiers go at the end. They use lowercase u for UTF-8. http://us2.php.net/manual/en/reference.pcre.pattern.modifiers.php PCRE uses (?# for specifying internal comments. I should think that whatever you do (if not a separate service) it would be only at the start or end of the pattern (only one or the other). I would not suggest attempting to split the pattern or make a new internal option. The native PCRE internal modifiers apply to the part of the pattern that follows the point of inclusion.
