Mike,
I replicated your issue, but I used {alt}{left}{alt} and
{alt}{right}{alt}, since I believe you were in error not to use an alt
for the alt up and the alt down. Using slow or fast didn't fix it.
However, I don't see those funny characters if I use
au.send("{altdown}{left}{altup}") and au.send("{altdown}{right}{altup}")
