\x is supposed by followed by exactly two hex digits. The doc is clear
on this: "Exactly 2 digits must follow \x"
I tried win.debug(" \x01") and my debug window properly has a space in
front of the character.
The last, it knows there were fewer than two characters after \x, but
the second shows it isn't testing to make sure both characters are hex
digits (unless space is being given exceptional treatment).
