PowerPro already does this. You can also use exec refreshenvironment to manually update. There is an options to control whether or not empty env variables are deleted in this process in advanced|other dialog. Not sure why this would not work for you. Are you running 64 bit windows. Is excel 64 bit (??). There are different registry sections for 32 and 64 bit apps, but I would be surprised if it applies to environment variables. The latest is 4.9n at the standard download.
