PowerTOP just struck me with the following message: Suggestion: enable the HPET (Multimedia Timer) in your BIOS or add the kernel patch to force-enable HPET. HPET support allows Linux to have much longer sleep intervals.
So it turned out my current laptop (ICH4M chipset) does not support HPET after all - but what exactly are High Precision Event Timers and why can my CPU sleep longer when they are enabled? And how can this HPET-force-enable patch make my Kernel use HPET if my hardware does not support it? Does this make any sense? Since I am going to switch to a Santa Rosa based laptop somewhen soon, I guess it shouldn't bother me a lot, but I'm just curious to know... ;) BTW: Does anyone know if Santa Rosa will work flawlessly with Linux already? Are there in-kernel drivers for all components? I think Arjan mentioned that the GM965 integrated graphics (I think it's called GMA X3100) are already supported through the i915 driver, but how about the new so-called Robson chips?
