Yeah, really doesn't make sense "read" the patch, because it move
files locations and add some autotools scripts. It's better apply and
see what happens. ;)

what's the benefit of this to either me or a user?

I don't see that as benefit..
- Easy ctags generation (make ctags)
adding ctags would be at most 1 makefile line though..
- Intuitive installation (./configure; make; sudo make install)
as opposed to "make ; sudo make install" ;)
