If you don't need the power, why not buy a CPU that is designed to save power such as the VIA C3? Or are there any recent Intel CPUs for Desktops designed to save power?

I need the power. I'd go for an AMD BE-2350 too (only 45W TDP, also much cheaper) but then I'll be stuck with amd/nvidia onboard graphic and I'm through with this binary crap. Also, I like the recent Intel efforts towards Open Source, like PowerTop or the new graphic drivers. I know their licensing sometimes suck (ie wlan-firmware) but I think Intel is on its right way and it's worth supporting them.

BTW: There is no difference between GMA-3100 or X3100...but I think for Desktop boards the integrated graphics chip from Intel is called X3000 and is faster than the "mobile" X3100.

Yes, there is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_GMA#Table_of_GMA_graphics_cores_and_chipsets

It's very hard to find something to read about the 3100 though (and X3100). No docs on Intel Website :/ The X3100 is much better with doing stuff in HW according to the wikipedia table (no idea how the linux driver makes use of it though). I'd be glad to hear if there's an affordable (Intel) Desktopboard with it.
