xmms2 might be what you're looking for.  It's a client/server 
arrangement where xmms2d does the work and can be driven from a variety 
of clients including the command line.  The daemon doesn't seem to have 
much impact on wakeups.  Your choice of clients will be the determining 
factor on additional wakeups.  If you start a playlist with the command 
line interface it will have zero impact.  GUI clients are going to add 
some overhead since they will certainly be making requests to the daemon 
to check status.
